The surge of cleaning requests puts us certified technicians in an ethical dilemma. Our training involves evaluating evidence to determine whether or not a fireplace is fit for use. For instance, we might be called for cleaning and find that the vents in front of a prefab have been covered over by remodeling work, putting the fireplace at risk of potential hazards. However, for many people on a budget, an inspection seems unnecessary, even if it might render their fireplace unsafe. Many falsely assume that a simple cleaning would be sufficient to ensure safety without consulting specialized equipment, which is why a Level 2 Chimney Inspection is required with each transfer of property, as per the National Fire Protection Code.

So with no one capable of performing a true Level 2 inspection, many settle for just cleaning or nothing at all. Why perform a camera scan of the chimney flue?

Over time, terracotta tiles line internally, which crack and fall in due to temperature changes and water entry. This can cause obstructions and expose nearby combustibles to high temperatures. Thus, a chimney scan ascertains whether the flue is free of defects to avoid hazardous situations. For prefabricated or factory-built systems, we assess for burst seams, warping where the pipe sections meet, and improper installation methods, among other things.
