About
For 12 years, I've been playing guitar and have had an assortment of musical experiences. I've played rock, bluegrass, and jazz in numerous bands and combos. I received extensive training at New England Conservatory, where I majored in Contemporary Improvisation and minored in Music Theory. There, I studied with Joe Morris, Hankus Netsky, and Stratis Minakakis. I also studied jazz guitar at Oberlin College with Bob Ferrazza and worked with Julian Lage and Bryan Sutton at the Savannah Music Festival.

My passion for music goes beyond personal expression. I believe in music as a shared social experience and a chance for individuals of varying ages and skill levels to develop self-confidence and experience joy. As an instructor, I strive to break down concepts, be it a chord progression, a scale, or something more complex, into simple, understandable portions that my students can approach with a sense of curiosity and agency. While I can teach music theory and sightreading, I'm an advocate of working by ear as I believe it helps students learn music from recordings and improvise, leading to a deeper understanding and enjoyment of the music.

With older students, I prefer they have the freedom to choose what they want to learn. I aim to help them develop their personal styles, repertoires, and the technical, aural, theoretical, and conceptual skills to genuinely engage with the type of music they're passionate about. However, I'm also capable of teaching fundamentals and working with younger children. I'm eager to help students write their music and share my enthusiasm for music with anyone willing to learn.

Aside from teaching guitar, I'm also comfortable teaching electric bass in rock and funk styles, beginner piano, songwriting, composition, production/recording techniques/mixing, and beginner voice. My pricing model is flexible based on the needs of my students. Let's chat!

Working with Cole is an excellent experience! He possesses extensive knowledge and expertise in both practical and theoretical teaching at an advanced level, making him capable of mentoring you through any phase of your learning process. He does not presume that you only want to learn the theoretical concepts, as he seeks your opinion before dedicating any lesson time to the practical aspects of guitar training.
