I am writing this letter to lend my support for Tom Lopez and the music lessons he provides at the Universal City Music Studio. My son, Jacob Bissell, has been a student of Tom's since his Kitty Hawk Middle School days, where Tom taught him drum techniques in addition to his lessons at school, resulting in Jacob ending his middle school tenure as an honored musician with a solid music foundation. Jacob went on to audition for the marching band at Judson High School and secured a position on the Judson Drum Line as a bass player. He held this position for two years, despite having the option to move to snare position in his second year. During this time, Jacob also started taking guitar lessons from Mr. Lopez. After two years with the Varsity Judson High School Band, Drum Line, Jacob decided to take a break and auditioned for a percussionist role at Youth Orchestras of San Antonio (YOSA), where he was awarded a seat with the Philharmonic Orchestra, YOSA's top performing orchestra. Jacob held this position during his junior and senior years at Judson High School, which meant he had to be enrolled in the music program, prompting him to seek the orchestra director at Judson HS for a bass position. He started the semester in the Beginner Orchestra and quickly moved up to the Honors Orchestra for which he received honors recognition. All through this time, Jacob has been a consistent student of Tom's, taking music lessons and participating in recitals. With college looming, Jacob realized that music therapy was the area of study he wanted to pursue, but only two Texas colleges offered it - one in Houston and the other at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas. Jacob applied to both colleges, and thankfully, after going through the Music School auditions with the Director at Incarnate Word, he was awarded a Music School scholarship and an academic scholarship, making the decision to accept the spot on the Incarnate Word music school roster more comfortable. I want to take this opportunity to congratulate Thomas Lopez for the incredible influence he has had on Jacob's musicianship. Tom's guidance has elevated Jacob to a high level of performance, as evidenced by his current active participation in the Incarnate Word Chorale, performing in two bands - Disposable and 16 Psyche, writing music, teaching himself piano, and singing. I have below several links to some of Jacob's performances, some of which can also be found on YouTube by searching the names of the groups and looking for "YOSA presents Carmina Burrana," where you'll see Jacob's senior slide on the screen behind the orchestra at the beginning credits. Jacob has performed with nationally known artists while in the Youth Orchestras of San Antonio, including going on tour to Canada with the organization, and appeared twice with the first group to perform in the new Tobin Center about a month before Paul McCartney played the venue. Once again, I'd like to thank Thomas Lopez for the amazing mentorship that has brought out the best in my son's musical inclinations.
