Description:

To achieve the best learning outcome, it's important to establish connections between what we already know and what we're learning. As an educator, I strive to make the material relatable to my students and present the information through various learning styles. In my experience, allowing physical manipulation of concepts like reading music helps with retention, connection and preparation for further knowledge.

In assisting students to learn music, I use a language-learning model that emphasizes the four essential skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. These skills are necessary for proficient musicianship, and my approach helps students to discern different qualities of music, read and write music notation, and play/vocalize based on their chosen instrument. This method is commonly referred to as 'theory' and 'aural skills', but to me, it just means being a good musician.

Along with being a current singer with the San Diego Master Chorale and playing the violin, I teach voice, piano, and violin from my home in the Clairemont area of San Diego. I believe that helping students accomplish what they desire is the main objective of learning, and I am always eager to help my students achieve their musical goals. Please feel free to reach out if you have any queries.

Amy's first lesson with me went really well. She was super nice and quickly grasped the areas where I needed help. I am excited and eagerly waiting for more lessons with her.

Amy's lessons have made a significant difference in our 5 year-old's progress. Through personalized instruction tailored to his interests and developmental level, she has made learning fun. As a result, our child has improved his posture when playing and has even begun to read music.

Despite my age, I am making great strides in broadening my vocal range after just three lessons. Amy's instructions on how to reach the higher notes have been tremendously helpful.

Amy Long gave my granddaughter, who is 10 years old, an amazing first lesson. Miss Amy is skilled and inventive, and her passion is infectious. We had an exhilarating experience learning various techniques such as placing notes on the floor between bar lines, identifying all the notes on the keyboard, and creating basic melodies. As a result, we're thrilled and eager for next week's session!
