The San Diego Studio of Arts and Letters
To achieve the best learning outcome, it's important to establish connections between what we already know and what we're learning. As an educator, I strive to make the material relatable to my students and present the information through various learning styles. In my experience, allowing physical manipulation of concepts like reading music helps with retention, connection and preparation for further knowledge.
In assisting students to learn music, I use a language-learning model that emphasizes the four essential skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. These skills are necessary for proficient musicianship, and my approach helps students to discern different qualities of music, read and write music notation, and play/vocalize based on their chosen instrument. This method is commonly referred to as 'theory' and 'aural skills', but to me, it just means being a good musician.
Along with being a current singer with the San Diego Master Chorale and playing the violin, I teach voice, piano, and violin from my home in the Clairemont area of San Diego. I believe that helping students accomplish what they desire is the main objective of learning, and I am always eager to help my students achieve their musical goals.
