As a classically-trained Gospel & Christian Contemporary keyboardist with two decades of music performance and teaching experience, my approach to teaching emphasizes playing by ear using a foundation of music theory that's immediately practical. Similar to how we learn language as children, I believe that the best way to learn music involves listening, connecting the dots, and developing skills through exploration, repetition, and interaction.
To gain fulfillment in music-making, it's essential to understand what we're hearing and be able to replicate the sound. While I can read music, it's not necessary for most recreational musicians. Therefore, my focus is on teaching students to hear the melody, harmony, structure, and feel of music, which enables them to improvise and reproduce what they hear.
