I have a profound adoration for my profession. While engaged in piano tuning at someone's residence, I am occasionally struck with the realization that I am earning a livelihood through an occupation that has been in existence for over two-and-a-half centuries. It is not uncommon for me to come across dates inscribed by tuners from as far back as 1900 within the piano. I take pleasure in the fact that I am continuing a legacy that demands skill and expertise and that there is still a high demand for my craftsmanship.
In today's digitally oriented society, having an acoustic instrument to play is exceedingly rare. I relish the challenge of reviving an old, untuned piano to its former glory, especially when parents tell me that their child will be learning to play on it. It is the passing of an age-old tradition that truly imbues me with a sense of purpose.
