Greetings! I hope you're having a great day so far. My name is Peter Ko and I am a professional cellist based in San Diego. Currently pursuing my Doctorate in performance at UC San Diego, I work as a full-time performer, teacher, and student. Additionally, I serve as the Principal Solo Cellist for the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus. My vast experience as a cellist has taken me across North America and Europe, enabling me to work with remarkable musicians such as Charles Curtis, Mark Fewer, and the Dover Quartet. While I have served as the principal solo cellist for several ensembles, my strongest passion lies in chamber music and solo performances.
Teaching is an art that few can master, primarily because it requires expertise and experience to succeed. Having excelled as a cellist, I have been able to use my knowledge and insight to guide my students successfully. Every student requires a customized approach to tackle their particular difficulties, and as a skilled teacher, I can help each student reach their full potential. It is essential to understand that while talent is critical, instruction and effort play a crucial role in developing excellent technique and musicality.
As a teacher, I offer a unique set of experiences and approaches that can help bring out the best in my students. Being a former limited cellist, I understand the common technical difficulties that students face and how to overcome them successfully. I believe effort and instruction are the keys to success – and not just raw talent. In the past, I was involved with the Strong Harbour Strings Program in St. John's, Newfoundland, where I taught inner-city children for two years. At UCSD, I work as a teaching assistant for college courses and offer lessons to undergraduate cellists. Additionally, since returning to San Diego, I have maintained a small studio of private students ranging from age five to seventy-five.
Teaching is a fulfilling experience for me, and I'm delighted to see my students grow and develop as musicians and individuals. My focus is to share and cultivate a set of skills that will enable my students to achieve their best in music and everyday life. If you're looking to achieve the best in cello playing, I look forward to helping you or your child reach their goals.
