Description:

When it comes to music, I always prioritize fun for my students. I've been a teacher for over 20 years, and I've become adept at customizing lessons to each individual's needs. To encourage regular students, I offer block discounts.

As for myself, music has been a lifelong passion. I started playing the mandolin at 4 years old and haven't stopped since. I also teach and perform banjo, guitar, bass, ukulele, fiddle, singing, and songwriting. Growing up in a family of musical educators meant I learned to teach by ear, without any written materials. I teach pick-stroke by pick-stroke until my students can hear and understand the language and vocabulary of music.

One of my strengths is helping students unlock their creativity and write their own compositions. I have experience in many genres, from roots music to hip-hop to South American traditional music. I've played for Bill Monroe at the Grand Old Opry and collaborated with Raekwon from the Wu-Tang Clan.

I've also been recognized with IBMA award-nominations for Song of the Year, Mandolin Player of the Year, and Instrumental Album of the Year. My bluegrass band, Christopher Henry and The Hardcore Grass, has headlined many festivals and toured Australia.

Now settled in Charlotte, I'm happy to offer in-person or remote lessons in the surrounding area. Travel fees apply for visits.

I was one of the first to embrace Christopher’s technique and it consistently resonated with me every instance I implemented it. Christopher’s teachings continually improve, and his unwavering confidence in his pupils helps them to genuinely believe in their abilities. This was the manner in which he aided me.

Chris Henry possesses the expertise and composure vital for learning at any proficiency level. He offers comprehensive beginner, intermediate, and advanced lessons. While he retains knowledge of old-school customs, he also embraces modern perspectives. Teaching brings him immense joy, and there are limitless opportunities for learning from this exceptional artist. Certainly, highly recommended.

Having learned from Christopher's teachings, I can attest that he is an adept and compassionate instructor who prioritizes his students' growth. Whether through his recorded lessons or personalized private sessions, Christopher imparts a rich understanding of music and leverages his extensive background to tailor his guidance to the students' interests. Although I came to him with a proficiency with notations and tabs, Christopher's auditory-focused approach enhanced my musical acumen. I highly advocate for Christopher as he is a skilled musician and a remarkable teacher!

I've only taken a single lesson, but Chris was very attentive, perceptive, and motivating. I am extremely enthusiastic about collaborating with him! His approach makes me believe that I will soon become an expert, ha-ha!

Chris is an exceptional teacher who possesses equal talent in playing and instructing. His musical prowess started early, owing to his family's lineage of gifted bluegrass musicians. His mastery in the craft is evident when he plays, inspiring anyone who hears him. His skills prompted me to take mandolin lessons under his guidance. Fortunately, when Chris lived near me in VA, I saw him weekly. I appreciated how he taught me to learn by ear and pick out tunes. I also admired his way of discussing theoretical concepts in an understandable manner. He gave me the capacity to create my own melodies over a chord progression, enabling me to jam with other musicians. Within nine months of working with Chris, I learned more than with any other instructor. I found his suggestions on daily practice essential in improving my skills. Even after his move, I still practice frequently. My progress is apparent as my hands and fingers have become more familiar with playing difficult notes. I even discern his theoretical teachings when listening to other music. I practice while commuting to and from work, and strangers compliment me on my playing. This newfound confidence has inspired me to continue learning, and I'm considering taking guitar lessons from Chris, who also offers Skype and video lessons.
