Drawing on my two decades of experience, I am adept at guiding students towards success. While I offer exclusively online lessons, those residing in Michigan may opt for face-to-face lessons at my personal studio in Lake Orion. Boasting a welcoming demeanor, I have experience working with students of all ages - from four to sixty and over - and customize my teaching approach to their unique needs. Each class is both engaging and informative, with my students learning to read sheet music, play solos, improvise, collaborate with a band, and more.

My past students have gone on to study at prestigious universities such as the University of Michigan, Southern California University, Eastern Michigan University, Oakland University, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. Even better, Grammy-winning percussionist Jeffrey Grant is a former student of mine, now part of both the LA Philharmonic and the President's Own Marine Band.

Interested students can enjoy a complimentary first lesson and select from my flexible schedule and payment options. Thirty or sixty-minute lessons are available, during which we'll warm up using the right techniques, review previous lessons, learn new music or refine existing material, and perform our tunes with newfound confidence. After taking detailed notes, our students are encouraged to practice every day and repeat the process - again and again.

For a little over 2 years, my daughters (ages 12 and 10) have been receiving piano lessons from Nick at Matthews Piano & Drum. They have thoroughly enjoyed their lessons and are constantly learning new tunes. Nick ensures that the children are engrossed, having a great time, while also acquiring a comprehensive understanding of the fundamentals of music, such as scales and reading sheet music. Nick can personalize the program to each child's specific interests and learning pace. Even though the lessons are currently virtual, the kids remain dedicated and practice regularly. Ultimately, we are satisfied with the experience and will continue with the program.

Since February of 2022, my two boys—ages 6 and 4—have been receiving a combination of online and in-person piano lessons from Mr. Nick. To say that he is amazing would be an understatement. Nick is always punctual, prompt in communication, and flexible in adapting his teaching to meet the individual needs of our children. He is willing and able to work with us when we need to make scheduling changes without any hesitation, and he consistently over communicates to ensure that there are no misunderstandings. With two kids at very different levels, Nick demonstrates great patience and editing skills to ensure that my 4-year-old is learning without becoming overwhelmed. He is able to gauge when my younger child has had enough without pushing him too hard. Nick also goes above and beyond with my older child, who has a natural aptitude for learning the piano. He challenges my 6-year-old, adjusts his lessons to keep him engaged, and always manages to pique his interest with cool new songs to play. My kids cannot wait for their lessons with Nick each week. My younger child even says he loves Nick because he has a great sense of humor, while my older child is constantly amazed by the new skills he is learning. Overall, I highly recommend Nick as a piano teacher for anyone looking for a knowledgeable, patient, and fun-loving instructor.

After a 15-year hiatus, I made the decision to rekindle my piano skills at the age of 31. Throughout this endeavor, Nick provided unwavering support, ensuring that the lessons remained tailored to my preferences. Collaborating with him was an enjoyable experience, to say the least. Nick emphasized the importance of correct posture and technique while also delving into music theory. He actively listened to my input and suggestions. During one session, I sustained some injuries while training, and Nick insisted that we postponed lessons so that I could recover (remember to keep your wrists straight, children!). He offered exercising routines that maintained muscle flexibility and additionally consulted with another teacher to ensure he left no stone unturned. Overall, Nick is an incredible instructor with a delightful approach towards teaching. I would certainly consider taking lessons with him again and recommend him highly. 10/10.
