After growing up in Skaneateles Falls, N.Y., Ms. Kylie Brown made her way to Asheville, N.C. to further her journey in music education and performance. Kylie boasts a vastly diverse musical background, which includes expertise in voice, trombone, piano, guitar, and flute. She earned her undergraduate degree in music education and studied instrumental conducting at the Greatbatch School of Music at Houghton College in 2011. The active music scene in Asheville lured Kylie in 2015 and since then she has been grateful for the opportunities that have come her way. She has served as the Program Director of the Asheville Music School, been an executive director of Girls Rock, played a key role in coaching rock bands, directed musical theater for youth and adults, performed as a vocalist and instrumentalist in local bands, provided music therapy to those in need, and has been a music teacher with Buncombe County Schools and Black Mountain Center for the Arts. Her experiences have taught her how to teach students of varied ages, backgrounds, and proficiency levels, which includes hobbyists and professionals.
As a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and a certified instructor for the Northwest Institute of Voice, Kylie applies her knowledge of vocal science and pedagogy to help her clients find their true voice – a healthy and unwavering tone that they can use with confidence. She shares her daily practice of meditation and breath work with her clients to cultivate mindfulness in their lives as musicians.
Kylie’s priority as a teacher is to balance fun and challenge in every lesson. She regularly checks in with her students to understand their musical goals and constantly researches new techniques that will benefit them. She is experienced in teaching ear training to students with varying levels of skill and can help novice musicians match pitch, as well as assist advanced-level students with harmonization. Each lesson will involve a focus on healthy technique, music theory, refining repertoire, and fostering creative exploration, such as brainstorming and performing original compositions. Kylie has expertise in various genres, including classical, jazz, musical theater, and rock, and employs classical and contemporary teaching methods to help her students achieve their goals. She encourages all of her students to use mindfulness to enhance their joy of music and believes that studying music can lead to a more conscientious and emotionally intelligent society.

As a beginner of 30 years, I decided to take my first voice lesson with Kylie and was extremely satisfied with the experience. Kylie maintained a positive and uplifting attitude, which helped me feel comfortable expressing myself and asking questions during the lesson. As a non-singer with professional training, I sought Kylie's help in preparing for a musical theatre audition with a song. Due to limited time, I hoped to improve my technique and learn the song quickly. Kylie provided technique-building exercises to practice daily while directly working on the song with me. In addition to guiding me towards my goals, she identified the strengths and weaknesses of my voice and helped me work with them. Despite having few sessions, these lessons were invaluable and incredibly enjoyable.
