After attaining a BA in music education from National Taiwan Normal University and an MA in music composition from Carnegie Mellon University, I became a certified Dalcroze music educator, a piano faculty member at Suffolk County Community College since 2008, and a music director at Faith Bible Church in Flushing, NY.
Over the past 28 years, I have vast experience in teaching various subjects including piano, music theory, aural skills, choral conducting, and music arranging and composition to students of all ages, from 4 to 80. As a native Taiwanese, I am comfortable teaching in either English or Mandarin.
My music composition and performance expertise in classical, children's musical, gospel and worship genres, along with my knowledge of jazz chord reading and classic finger techniques, enables me to impact the piano education of my students depending on their individual goals. My students are well-prepared for recitals, NYSSMA, ABRSM Royal Music Exam, music school auditions, church worship services, recording sessions and competitions, among other things.
I don't limit my students to note reading and finger techniques though. My coaching goes beyond that; it includes practice strategy, finger techniques, aural training, music theory, physical coordination, music improv, stage presentation, team rehearsal and problem solving. I love to see hidden potential identified and developed. Consequently, many of my previous students now work in music-related fields or are active musicians. Therefore, I equip students with multiple disciplines to augment their musical learning and experience resulting in joyous music making and integrated musicianship.

For a year and a half, my daughter has been receiving piano lessons from Ms. Julie. One of Ms. Julie's standout qualities is her ability to tailor her classes to suit the needs of individual students with utmost professionalism. Be it a young child struggling to differentiate between the left and right hand, or an adult looking to refresh their piano skills, Ms. Julie caters to all. Her students range from as young as four all the way up to age 60 and beyond, some of whom still travel a considerable distance to attend her lessons despite her having moved to a new location two years ago. Ms. Julie maintains an ideal balance of both discipline and encouragement when teaching, making her classes highly recommended.
