If you live outside of the Silicon Valley area, I am currently only offering online lessons. Please note that I am located in California. Private 1:1 lesson requests will be waitlisted. I am currently only open for team sessions.
ABOUT TEAM SESSIONS: I offer Accelerated Teams, which is a unique learning environment where up to four dedicated students can practice, perform, and learn from each other, in addition to receiving individualized instruction from the teacher. This format is becoming increasingly popular in many music studios across the country due to its benefits over traditional 1:1 lessons.
During team sessions, you will get real-time feedback on your practice, developing better practice habits outside of lessons and allowing for faster progress. As you work with other students, you will gain independence and confidence in tackling new pieces and mastering them. Regular performance opportunities in a friendly environment provide an opportunity to practice and prepare before performing for a larger audience. Additionally, you become part of a supportive music-making community where you can learn from other students regardless of their age or skill level.
Although I specialize in classical piano and basic jazz and improvisation, and composition, I can accommodate any style of music you wish to learn. During the interview/consultation, we can discuss your specific goals and determine if my offerings are suitable for you.
LOGISTICS: Accelerated Team sessions are offered in 60 (for children only), 75, and 90-minute increments, with fees of $60, $75, and $90 per session, respectively. Teams can accommodate up to five students and are available on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons as well as Wednesday evenings, Saturdays and Sundays. Students must attend sessions weekly and be able to make up any missed lessons.
I generally only accept children aged 8 and up, with exceptions considered for younger students with active parent supervision and participation. There will be studio-wide recitals every six months both online and in person, with participation encouraged.
HOW TO APPLY: If you are interested in joining one of the Accelerated Teams, please send me a direct message through CrackerJack to set up an interview and free consultation.
BIO: I am a lifelong musician with extensive education and experience in piano and music in general, including classical, jazz, improvisation, composition, computer, and experimental music. I studied music at Princeton and Stanford University and am an active composer, innovator, and music educator. You can check out my website, YouTube, and Spotify channels to see some of my works in the portfolio below.
Since 2019, I have been teaching extensively, working with both adults and children of varying levels. After filling up all my available slots in Silicon Valley through word-of-mouth referrals, I have expanded my studio and offerings to include more online lessons and the highly effective Accelerated Teams format, inspired by my own teacher, David Chang, and others. I continue to strive for my own excellence, mastery, and artistic freedom through ongoing training in music and teaching.

If you're searching for a piano teacher, I wholeheartedly recommend Hana! She's remarkable in her field, possessing an amiable, compassionate and tolerant nature that makes her an exquisite teacher for children. Despite my daughters' strikingly different personalities, she effortlessly tailored her teaching techniques to benefit each of them, rendering not just lessons but also cultivating their love for music.

For the past three months, Hana has been teaching my 14-year-old son, and I am amazed at the progress he has made and how much he enjoys his lessons. In the previous few years with other teachers, he did not experience such positive outcomes. Hana has a great connection with him, displaying patience, kindness, and fun, while imparting approachable piano lessons. She is excellent at breaking down complex compositions, allowing him to master each section, thus understanding the music thoroughly. Hana is an unparalleled instructor, able to teach any age or skill level!

Having Hana as my piano instructor has been an absolute delight. Although I am a novice, I find it challenging to assess the full scope of Hana's knowledge and expertise. Nevertheless, it is evident that she excels at crafting a personalized and well-structured approach to learning music and piano, encompassing different genres, techniques, and concepts. Her support has played a crucial role in my piano-learning journey, and I am excited to continue our collaboration.

Over the course of 60 years of piano lessons, I've had around 10 different teachers. However, Hana Shin is undoubtedly the best teacher I have ever had. Not only is she an incredibly talented musician with a vast knowledge across all genres, from classical to pop, but she also possesses an appreciation for precision and non-judgmental patience. Her gentle approach and contagious passion for music are also noteworthy. What truly sets Hana apart from my other teachers, though, is her unique skill in creating a clear and logical process tailored to each individual student's level and interests.
For many years, I sought to move beyond sight-reading and learn how to improvise around blues and jazz. However, working with four other instructors proved to be a frustrating experience. That is, until I met Hana. She is the only teacher who has successfully adapted her approach to my specific capabilities and limitations, providing a step-by-step process that I can easily understand and execute at my own pace.
In addition to recommending theory books and assigning tailored exercises, Hana's guidance has helped me uncover the mysteries of blues and jazz improvisation. During a recent recital, I noticed how her personalized approach also inspired other students to excel in themes ranging from Beethoven to Ray Charles.
Whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player, Hana Shin can help you discover the infinite joys of playing piano regardless of age or level.

When my daughter Stefanie was around five years old, she began playing the piano. Now, at six years old, she has had a few teachers prior to meeting Hana. I consider myself fortunate to have found Hana, as she is an excellent teacher and I need not search for anyone better. Although she has discipline, Hana is not overly strict. She possesses a love for teaching and knows how to direct and encourage my daughter, especially when she becomes unfocused or carried away. Twice a year, Hana goes to great lengths to hold recitals, and I must say, the winter one we just had was fantastic. Hana, thank you for inspiring Stefanie. You're more than a great teacher!
