For the past 20 years, I have been teaching beginner to advanced level flute, clarinet, and saxophone as well as music theory and improvisation in Fair Oaks, CA. With over 40 years of professional experience as a touring and recording musician, songwriter, teacher, and award-winning composer, I have worked with young, aspiring musicians, including an autistic student, and advanced students in improvisation. Currently, I teach 20 students at Folsom High School which has been consistently rated one of the top high school jazz ensembles in the US by Downbeat Magazine.
My teaching is tailored to the needs of each individual student. For beginners, I focus on developing strong embouchure and breathing techniques while learning scales through CD-enhanced learning for improved musicality. Advanced students work on refining technique and musicality. Improvisation students learn music theory and its application to their instruments through soloing, including the analysis of chord symbols, the use of scales, and modes to improvise over chord changes, pentatonics, major and minor scale harmony, diminished and whole-tone harmony, and an introduction to atonality or nontonal music.
My specialties include jazz and classical music, live performance, scoring to picture, composition, music theory, saxophone, piano theory, improvisation, piano, artist development, recording, editing, and production.
