Description:

With over twelve years of experience, I have had the opportunity to teach viola, violin, and music theory to students of varying ages and levels of proficiency. I have worked with a range of learners, from 7-year-olds to high school students, conservatory students, and adult learners.

In my teaching, I strive to connect musical concepts with everyday experiences. By observing our body movements during other activities, we can learn a great deal about how to play an instrument fluidly and efficiently. When teaching viola or violin, I prioritize bio-mechanical ease and injury prevention to ensure playing is pain-free and enjoyable. As a performer, teaching music theory involves contextualizing it within the performance setting to make it more meaningful.

I am dedicated to being available to my students beyond weekly lessons for questions and other concerns.

I hold multiple degrees from esteemed institutions like The Juilliard School, the Eastman School of Music, and the New England Conservatory. At these schools, I taught both college and pre-college viola and music theory classes. My illustrious principal teachers include Kim Kashkashian and Carol Rodland.

Furthermore, I am a fluent speaker of both Spanish and English.

I am currently providing both online and in-person lessons in the Boston area.

Enrolled in a Masters in Viola program at Juilliard, I was recommended by my instructor to receive summer lessons from Sergio to start building the foundation for the skills I will cultivate over the next two years. With an exceptional ability to bring out the best in his students, Sergio is an outstanding viola teacher. Although I am a beginner, Sergio coached me to create a unique sound with depth and clarity. I can confidently say that he is one of the most passionate instructors I have ever encountered. His infectious energy sets me on the edge of my seat during lessons, and I feel motivated to improve after each session. If you aspire to elevate your playing to a professional level, then I highly recommend Sergio as an instructor.

He incorporates techniques from renowned pedagogues into each lesson with ease, offering invaluable guidance to enhance your performance. In only one session, he rectified a significant sound problem, boosting my confidence as a player by the third lesson.
