AP Chemistry and Honors Chemistry
A wonderful opportunity for your student to get a head start on the upcoming school year would be to enroll in our online summer course in AP or honors chemistry and/or biology. My name is Patricia Babin, a retired biochemist with a PhD in biochemistry, who is passionate about teaching these subjects. With eight years of experience in tutoring and accolades for my teaching in graduate school, I have found the best platform for online learning after trying several. I encourage you to read Annabelle's review on our website to gain an understanding of our unique approach to education.
Class Structure and Content:
Our classes will have a maximum of five students to ensure that everyone can ask questions and receive answers. The course comprises two one-hour online sessions every week, which are available from mid-June to mid-August. The tuition fee per lesson is $25. We work around the students' availability to determine the start and end dates and time of the day that will work for everyone. For convenience, all classes will be recorded, and the recorded version will be available online so that students can be able to travel without missing a class. In our sessions, I will teach the concepts, work on sample problems and leave room for students to ask questions and get answers. Each lesson will have assigned problems to complete, which will be graded, with a solution set available, ensuring that students can check their work. After each session, students will receive a copy of the whiteboard used for the lesson.
Honors Chemistry Topics:
We will cover as much as possible in our online honors chemistry classes, including measurements and calculations, atomic structure, periodic properties, bonding in ionic and covalent compounds, nuclear chemistry, the mole, chemical reactions, stoichiometry, states of matter, gases, and solution concentration. Algebra 1 completion is mandatory to take our honors chemistry course.
Honors Biology Topics:
The topics we will cover in honors biology are scientific thinking, hypothesis and testing, the chemistry of life, cellular structure and functions, photosynthesis and cellular respiration, the cell cycle, mitosis and meiosis, genetics, molecular genetics, human genetics and biotechnology, and evolution. With time permitting, we will also cover ecology. Alonso, we don’t require a textbook purchase. Instead, we use ck-12 free biology textbooks written by expert professors concerned about the high cost of textbooks.
AP Chemistry and Biology Topics:
Our AP courses cover topics that are fixed by the College Board in the College Board Course and Exam Description documents for each course. Our AP chemistry course comprises atomic structure and properties, types of chemical bonds, intermolecular forces and gas laws, chemical reactions, equilibrium, acids and bases, kinetics, thermodynamics, and applied thermodynamics. Students must complete an honors chemistry course or its equivalent before taking AP chemistry. Lastly, we don’t require a textbook purchase for our courses.
Our AP Biology course involves the chemistry of life, cells, energetics, cellular communication, heredity, gene expression and regulation, evolution, and ecology, time permitting. Prior completion of a chemistry course is necessary for students to enroll. We recommend renting Campbell Biology in Focus, 3rd edition, which is an optional textbook in addition to our slides and figures from the textbook. The cost of renting is $9.99 per month.
