Learning to play music can be overwhelming, but I customize each lesson to suit the individual student's needs. My goal is to promote personal empowerment, a deep understanding of music, and a joyful love of the process. With over 8 years of teaching experience and a mastery of various instruments and musical traditions, my approach is holistic and rigorous, catering to the lifelong journey of musical engagement.My instrumental specialties include upright bass, electric bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, fiddle, banjo, and lap slide. Additionally, I can guide beginners through piano and drum kit basics. While my roots are deeply planted in jazz and traditional folk, I have firsthand experience in funk, gospel, pop/rock, and classical music.
As a musical entertainer, I lead jazz and old time string bands, offering a range of musical styles for various occasions. From solo fingerpicked guitar for weddings to high energy party bands, cocktail jazz to everything in between, I am dedicated to delivering an exceptional musical experience.

Learning the basics of clawhammer banjo from Michael was a truly enjoyable experience. I cannot recommend his skills and talents as a string instrument player and tutor enough. Not only is he capable of teaching the finer techniques of playing the instrument, but he also possesses extensive knowledge of musical theory. With his expertise, I have no doubts that aspiring players of any skill level can enhance their craft.

I am feeling nostalgic for the times when I used to study with Michael. It was natural for him to move away and follow his passions, and thus we had to part ways professionally.
Michael was simply perfect for me in terms of his approach to playing, skill level, and music education. I am confident that he has only improved since our time together.
Not only was he a fantastic instructor, but he also made for great company and I view him as a friend.
As a musician, he embodies all of the qualities that I admire in a bass player (and in music in general).

Mike DeVito is an exceptional teacher and musician! His bass lessons are always a worthwhile, valuable experience. He is prompt and flexible, making scheduling a breeze. His extensive knowledge and expertise allow him to work with students of all levels to help them progress. Mike provides personalized exercises to work on, guides students through learning their favorite songs, and presents music theory in an accessible manner.
