About
For 30 years I have provided private music lessons and owned and operated the Orion Music Studio in Lake Orion for 23 years. My specialty lies in American finger-style guitar and traditional banjo styles. As a performer, I not only write songs but compose for solo guitar and play both solo and ensemble settings. Throughout my career, I have recorded multiple albums and toured nationally and internationally. In 2002, I completed my graduate degree in music with a focus on the late guitarist John Fahey and his influence on 20th-century musical identity.

My approach to teaching prioritizes general guitar and banjo playing with a concentration on finger-picking techniques. My ultimate goal is for students to become self-sufficient players. The key to achieving this is through active application, which includes incorporating note reading and arranging. I focus on teaching a holistic approach to students' instruments and related theory. The student-teacher relationship is emphasized, with a balanced 50/50 approach to direction. I strive to leave no gaps in my comprehensive teaching style.

I have had an amazing journey with Nick, who has transformed me from a novice to an accomplished guitar player. He possesses a pre-planned fingerstyle curriculum but is also amenable to facilitating learning of any music genre. He has been instrumental in helping me curate my songs and guided me throughout the process. Besides fingerstyle, I have learned strumming patterns, song structure, advanced chords, and chord progressions. His passion and expertise in teaching and music radiates through our lessons. For anyone seeking to elevate their guitar skills, Nick is an excellent choice, regardless of whether one is a beginner or advanced player.

For a decade now, I've been receiving instruction from Nick. Initially, I undertook banjo lessons before transitioning to fingerstyle guitar, where my focus lay on jazz and folk genres. In my opinion, gaining expertise in playing an instrument necessitates one enlisting professional guidance and adhering to weekly sessions for assessment of musical progress. Nick's tutelage has involved teaching me everything from music theory and moving up and down the fretboard, to arranging melodies. With Nick's education, experience, and teaching style, you'll be proficient in strumming the guitar, banjo, mandolin, or ukulele in no time. I wholeheartedly endorse him as an instructor.
