Heavy Hitters University

Greetings, I am Coach Jason McDermott, the creator of Heavy Hitters U High-Level Swing Instruction. While I did not go pro in baseball and only played until high school, my passion for coaching started when I aimed to improve my own softball swings. In my search for knowledge, I came across Epstein Hitting on YouTube, and was immediately struck by their identification of movements and drills from MLB hitters. I trained with Epstein Hitting Master Instructor Anthony Brites, was awed, and soon became an Epstein Hitting Instructor, interning under Coach Brites. The immense knowledge they shared was unknown to me before, but countless hours of studying videos of elite hitters led me to understand their movements that set them apart from others. I sought to apply these movements to my own swing and share this information with other hitters. I started doing one-on-one lessons in local parks until I found my home at The HIT Factory. Epstein Hitting instructor Jake Epstein trained me, whose father Mike Epstein created the rotational hitting term and started Epstein Hitting, receiving a Letter of Recommendation for hitting instruction from great hitter Ted Williams. At present, Jake Epstein is a hitting consultant for the Milwaukee Brewers and teaches amateur and professional baseball and softball players. I work with him and Coach Brites in Epstein Hitting camps in the Tri-State area. In April 2019, I achieved OnBaseU Level 1 Hitting Instructor status after searching for ways to help hitters struggling due to movement issues. This program taught me how to quickly screen players for physical limitations and their impact on performance, with every player at Heavy Hitters given a physical screening assessment. Finally, I am thankful for the influences in my journey, including Jake and Mike Epstein, Master Instructor Brites, the OnBaseU team, Coach Mike Quiroz, and many others in the hitting industry like Matt Lisle, Richard Schenck, Rob Benjamin, Casey Smith, Craig Wallenbrock, and Doug Latta, who helped mold me into the coach I am today.
