Piano Teaching:
As a Doctor of Musical Arts in Piano Performance and holder of a Fellowship in Piano Performance (Special Candidate Award), the highest diploma level awarded by Trinity London of College, I offer innovative and integrated basic music history, theory, and aural skills curriculum for approximately 40 students ranging from ages 4 to 65. I have 15 years of teaching experience and consistently incorporate creative methods into studio instruction. As an educator, I enjoy making new concepts engaging and easy to absorb. I challenge my students to think critically, while presenting ideas in a relatable and profound way.
My primary approach focuses on developing methods that serve as a learning compass outside of the classroom. I prefer to cultivate autodidacticism for students, inspiring them to become independent musicians and lifelong learners. This entails providing feedback that brings out their best, setting goals to motivate them, and finding new angles in old pieces to work on. I also welcome unconventional and dynamic ideas from my students, which results in a continual learning experience for everyone involved.
Ultimately, I strive to encourage students to continue learning music as a lifelong passion.

Lounge Piano Service:
As a lounge pianist, I have played at various locations and events providing soothing music ranging from movie soundtracks to classical, jazz/pop, oldies, and Disney music. Prior to my relocation to SF in 2021, I performed at Claraboya Scratch Kitchen & Bar at Doubletree Hotel in Lubbock, Texas. My most recent performance in SF took place at Lion’s Den in Chinatown.

Several months ago, our six-year-old son expressed an interest in experimenting with musical instruments. We came across Dr. Ko on the CrackerJacks and decided to give it a try. It was a wonderful experience. Dr. Ko recommended some books for our son to begin with, and he was able to enjoy playing the piano and make rapid progress. Dr. Ko is also an excellent communicator, making it easy to reschedule when needed. He even helped our son prepare entertaining music pieces for his school event, which greatly motivated him to learn the fundamentals.

Initially, I attempted to learn piano through an app, however, my progress was stagnant. After receiving guidance from Dr. Ko, I was enlightened about the limitations of studying through an app and the significance of a proficient piano instructor. Dr. Ko's exceptional proficiency and passion for piano created an enjoyable and motivating learning atmosphere. Through Dr. Ko's instruction, I discovered the elegance in even the most basic musical compositions with proper technique.

Dr. Ko provides exceptional piano instruction to my eight-year-old son, who has been receiving lessons for a year and has made remarkable progress.
