With over 30 years of experience, I am a highly qualified martial artist, Focus Counter-Violence specialist, and law enforcement defensive tactics instructor. My extensive training includes various martial arts disciplines such as wrestling, Aikido, Shorei-ryu, Tang-Soo-Do, Taekwondo, Mixed Martial Arts, and Jeet-Kune-Do, which is the training method utilized in my instruction. Jeet-Kune-Do, famously designed by martial arts icon Bruce Lee, translates to “The Way of the Intercepting Fist” and is not specifically a martial arts system, but instead a training method that focuses on adaptability, efficiency, and individual expression.
JKD incorporates various techniques and strategies from multiple martial arts disciplines and evolves with each practitioner’s expression of the martial arts. As a versatile instructor and coach, I have had the opportunity to incorporate my background in wrestling, traditional martial arts, and modern-day Mixed Martial Arts competition into my coaching. My interest in mixed disciplines led me to Jeet-Kune-Do in the late 90s, which ultimately focused my combat sports and martial arts experience on reality-based self-defense.
I have also spent approximately 20 years training with Michael Vanbeek, the founder of Focus Counter-Violence, and currently serve as a Senior Instructor/Law Enforcement Consultant for the organization. Our training approach is not a one-size-fits-all system, as we understand that self-defense strategies must cater to each individual’s specific vulnerabilities and strengths. Our instruction entails a comprehensive education about the culture of violence, ensuring that our clients are equipped with counter-violence strategies and techniques to protect themselves in any situation.

I had an incredible experience with personalized attention and patience as the highlights. Roy's extensive experience in martial arts and teaching self defense is commendable as he trains us for real-life scenarios. He provides private lessons for both myself and my son at home, which I never thought I could afford. His classes are reasonably priced, awesome, and I highly recommend him! - Faisal

Over many years, I have benefitted greatly from the training provided by coach Roy Porter. In addition to the physical exercise incorporated into his training, he has aided me in honing my situational awareness and equipped me with the ability to surpass physical limitations. Through his guidance, I have grown stronger and more assured in my practice and instruction of other martial arts. His self defense training expertise is unparalleled, and I proudly refer to him as Sefu.

Back when Roy conducted training sessions outside of the dojo, I began my training with him alongside a group of men. Despite my being the only female in the group, Roy was mindful of my comfort level and leveraged the opportunity to give me practice with larger opponents. Eventually, we transitioned to private lessons, which allowed us to simulate real-life situations. These included takedowns against bigger opponents, strategies for when a man grabs my wrist or hair, ways to counter someone grabbing me from behind, and knife defense techniques. I felt well-prepared and confident in my ability to defend myself. I would still be training with Roy if he hadn't relocated out of state.
